How to read the natal chart wheel

In short

The wheel reads from the inside out. The outer ring holds the twelve zodiac signs, inside it are the twelve house sectors, planet glyphs sit on them, and the lines in the middle are aspects between planets. On the left of the horizontal axis is the Ascendant; at the top, the Midheaven.

The outer ring: signs

Twelve sectors of 30 degrees. They’re the scenery: they tell you in what manner a planet in that patch of sky operates.

The inner sectors: houses

Twelve areas of life. Their borders are uneven — width depends on the birth latitude and the chosen system. They count anticlockwise from the left horizontal.

The four key points

  • Left on the horizontal — the Ascendant, start of the 1st house: you yourself, your manner.
  • Right — the Descendant, start of the 7th: partnership and what you see in the other.
  • Top — the Midheaven (MC), start of the 10th: profession, reputation, aim.
  • Bottom — the Imum Coeli (IC), start of the 4th: roots, home, family.

Planet glyphs

Each planet is marked with its symbol and degree. The closer a planet stands to a house border, the more it «sounds» in the next house’s theme. Three or more planets in one house is a stellium — always the chart’s main theme.

The lines in the middle

Those are aspects — angular links between planets. Usually blue and red: harmonious and tense. The denser the web, the more tightly the areas of life are bound together.

Don’t try to read it all at once

The sane way in is one question at a time. «What’s in my 10th house», «explain my stellium», «why so many red lines». Viki answers piece by piece and holds the context, so it feels like a conversation, not a textbook.

How it looks in the chat
The wheel arrived and I understand nothing
That’s normal 🙂 One thing at a time. Look at the left end of the horizontal line — that’s your Ascendant, Aries. From there the houses run anticlockwise. Want to start with the house where you have the most planets?
