How to read a spread that wasn’t Viki’s

In short

List the layout, the positions and the cards — Viki reads the linkage. «Three cards: past — Five of Cups, present — the Magician, future — Two of Swords, the question was about work». Names can be dictated by voice, and if you don’t remember one — describe the picture in words.

What to say

  1. The layout: how many cards and what each position means.
  2. The cards in position order.
  3. The question the spread was cast for — without it the reading comes out generic.
  4. If you work with reversals — mention which fell reversed.

If you don’t remember the names

Describe the image: «a woman between two pillars with a book», «a man hanging upside down by one foot». Viki will understand, and ask back if there are several candidates.

Why bother when reference books exist

A single card’s meaning can be found anywhere. The difficulty is the linkage: how the first flows into the second and what the third says about the first two. That’s where you need an interlocutor who holds the whole spread and remembers your question.

The trick that teaches fastest

Send your own reading first, then ask for the analysis. «I think this says I’m stuck — am I right?» Viki will agree, argue, or add a layer. Arguing with a ready answer teaches more than reading one.

A spread from another reader

Also fine: describe what they laid out and said, then ask for a second opinion. Just don’t turn it into shopping for the answer you like best.

How it looks in the chat
Read this: three cards, past Five of Cups, present the Magician, future Two of Swords. About work
A telling linkage. Five of Cups — stuck in regret over what didn’t work out. The Magician in the present — all the tools are already on the table, the resource is here right now. Two of Swords in the future — keep refusing to choose and you’ll stay blindfolded. So the spread isn’t about circumstances, it’s about your decision. Agree?
