Where to keep a sigil

In short

Somewhere you’ll see it regularly but not constantly. Phone wallpaper is the most common choice and the quickest to fade into background. A printout in a notebook or on the desk lasts longer. The main rule: the symbol should catch your eye without turning into wallpaper in the figurative sense too.

The options

  • Lock-screen wallpaper — seen dozens of times a day. Plus: you won’t forget it. Minus: in a week you stop noticing.
  • A notebook’s cover or first page — appears when you sit down to work. Good for work intentions.
  • A printout on the desk or inside a cupboard door — rare but conscious.
  • In a wallet or phone case — for protective symbols that travel «with you».
  • As a pattern on jewellery — if you decide to order an engraving.

On habituation

Any symbol stops being noticed after one-two weeks in one place. That doesn’t mean it’s «spent»: the brain simply stopped reacting. Move it elsewhere — and attention returns.

On privacy

A sigil is a personal intention made object. Phone wallpaper is seen by everyone you show your screen to. If the intention is intimate, pick a place only you see.

When to take it down

When the task is solved. Keeping the symbol of a matter already closed is a way of quietly going on living in the old situation.

So where do I put it?
Depends on the intention. Work — on the notebook cover; you’ll see it every time you sit down to it. Protection — in the phone case or wallet. Personal — somewhere guests don’t look 🙂 And move it after a couple of weeks: you get used to it and stop noticing.
